Collaborative Professionals of Washington is the official site of CPW. Collaborative Practice is an alternative dispute resolution process where both parties are represented by attorneys, but they agree not to go to court. Washington State is the first state in the country to license non-attorneys to practice law. The first area of practice that we can be licensed in is family law. We are allowed to give legal advice, prepare documents, help people navigate the legal system. (We cannot appear in court with clients). We are all working with family law clients every day that we can suggest these kinds of programs to. We all have significant legal experience, education, and have attended law school classes and passed a licensing examination. We are called limited license legal technicians. (We are compared to "nurse practitioners" in the medical field).
